New Delhi: The Election Commission of India on Sunday announced the 2026 Assembly election schedule for five states and one Union Territory.
The elections will take place in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
Officials released the detailed timetable for the polls through two official schedules.
According to the Commission, the announcement begins the formal election process in these regions. As a result, the Model Code of Conduct comes into force immediately.
Poll preparations begin across five regions
State authorities will now begin preparations for conducting the elections. Meanwhile, political parties are expected to intensify campaigning across the five regions.
These polls will determine the formation of new governments in each state and the Union Territory.
The Commission said it has taken steps to ensure smooth and transparent elections. In addition, officials will deploy security personnel and election staff across polling stations.
Authorities will also use electronic voting machines along with voter-verifiable paper audit trail systems to maintain transparency.
The 2026 Assembly election schedule therefore sets the stage for one of the largest electoral exercises in the country this year.
Further details on nomination dates, polling phases and vote counting have been issued in the official schedules released by the Election Commission.
