Hyderabad traffic coordination meeting: Sajjanar chairs convergence talks at TG-ICCC

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar chaired a high-level Hyderabad traffic coordination meeting at the TG-ICCC in Banjara Hills to address traffic regulation, monsoon challenges and public safety through inter-departmental convergence.

Senior officials from GHMC, Traffic Police, Hyderabad, Rachakonda and Cyberabad police commissionerates, HYDRA, Water Works and the electricity department attended the meeting. The discussion focused on reducing congestion at major junctions, speeding up pending road repairs and completing long-delayed junction improvement works.

Officials reviewed measures to tackle waterlogging during the monsoon. The meeting decided to strengthen the drainage system and expand the use of robotic cleaning, which showed positive results in areas such as Malakpet. Authorities agreed to implement the technology at all identified waterlogging points across the city.

The meeting also discussed infrastructure changes affecting traffic flow. Officials proposed relocating bus stops that obstruct traffic to wider road sections. They also reviewed the removal of Sulabh complexes located in the middle of roads and examined the construction of foot overbridges to improve pedestrian safety.

To address the growing number of vehicles, departments agreed to improve parking infrastructure. The meeting decided to develop additional multi-level parking facilities and introduce a multi-level parking app to help motorists locate nearby parking spaces easily.

Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar welcomed the revival of regular coordination meetings among departments. He said police and municipal departments must work together to deliver better public services and ensure smoother traffic movement in the city.

GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan said departments such as the Water Board and the electricity wing must function in close coordination. He announced that powers and budgets would be delegated to field-level officers to speed up execution. He said monthly field visits could resolve nearly 80% of civic issues.

Karnan said officials would classify problems into short-term, medium-term and long-term categories for faster resolution. He also confirmed that the multi-level parking app would be launched soon to help drivers identify available parking locations.

HYDRA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath said teams were surveying waterlogging-prone areas to provide permanent solutions. He added that officials were also removing encroachments on footpaths to improve pedestrian movement.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) D. Joel Davis outlined several traffic management proposals. He stressed the need to reorganise bus stops, shift road-obstructing Sulabh complexes and construct foot overbridges at key locations. He also recommended installing road railings at areas such as Purana Pul, Bahadurpura, MJ Market, Masab Tank and Begumpet to prevent unsafe crossings.

Davis said unregulated auto parking near places such as Osmania Hospital caused severe congestion. He urged departments to create designated auto parking zones immediately.

Cyberabad Joint Commissioner of Police Gajarao Bhupal suggested assigning road cutting and patchwork to a single contractor to avoid delays. Water Works Managing Director Ashok Reddy said efforts were underway to improve sewerage and drainage systems and assured full cooperation from his department.

Officials jointly appealed to citizens to maintain cleanliness and avoid dumping garbage and plastic, especially polythene covers, into drains. They stressed that public participation was essential for traffic regulation and urban safety.

Additional commissioners, zonal commissioners, traffic DCPs and senior officials from HMD, GCI, the cantonment board, HYDRA and Water Works attended the meeting.
