Tripura: Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh said the Northeast holds strong potential to develop as a Southeast Asia trade corridor and urged officials to scale up bamboo utilisation to strengthen Tripura’s trade capacity.
Chairing a District Level Review Meeting at the Collector Office in Kamalasagar, Sepahijala district, the Minister called on the administration to adopt a structured and commercially viable approach to bamboo-based industries. He said enhanced value addition and better market access can significantly improve livelihoods and boost regional trade.
Bamboo key to Southeast Asia trade corridor vision
Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted that Tripura possesses rich bamboo forests, yet much of the resource remains under-utilised. Therefore, he stressed the need to expand bamboo applications in construction, interior design, handicrafts, jewellery and furniture. According to him, systematic promotion of bamboo enterprises can transform the State’s economic landscape.
Referring to connectivity initiatives, the Minister said train services linking Tripura to Bangladesh will provide a cost-effective trade route. Although work on the rail link has slowed due to the prevailing situation in Bangladesh, he noted that the project remains in place. Once operational, the connectivity will open Tripura and the wider Northeast as an important South Asian corridor for trade and business.
Earlier, district officials presented a detailed review of development indicators and governance initiatives. The presentation covered rural development schemes, infrastructure projects, Jal Jeevan Mission progress and PMAY-G performance. In addition, officials shared updates on institutional delivery rates, immunisation coverage and achievements in agriculture, horticulture and fisheries.
The administration also showcased innovative initiatives such as Mission Sankalp to eliminate child marriage and teenage pregnancy. Moreover, it highlighted e-Office implementation, QR-based feedback systems, Jan Sunwai grievance redressal, rooftop solarisation and rainwater conservation efforts.
Dr. Jitendra Singh urged coordinated action to integrate resource development, connectivity and governance reforms. Consequently, he expressed confidence that the Northeast can evolve into a Southeast Asia trade corridor with sustained planning and strategic investments.
