Hyderabad: Velugumatla house demolitions triggered a major political controversy in Telangana after revenue officials razed nearly 650 houses built on Bhoodan lands on the outskirts of Khammam. The demolition drive was carried out under heavy police security.
Residents alleged that authorities conducted the Velugumatla house demolitions without serving prior notices. Moreover, they claimed officials did not give them time to remove household belongings before flattening the structures using JCB machines. As a result, several families said they were rendered homeless within hours.
According to locals, repeated appeals to halt the demolition were ignored. In addition, they stated that no alternative housing or rehabilitation support was offered before the drive began. Consequently, tension prevailed in the area as police personnel were deployed in large numbers to prevent protests.
Velugumatla house demolitions draw sharp reaction from KTR
Amid growing anger, K. T. Rama Rao visited Velugumatla and met displaced families. He assured them of support and expressed solidarity with those affected.
Later, he criticised the state government in a post on X. He alleged that Revanth Reddy had promised to send ₹1,000 crore to the Gandhi family. Furthermore, he claimed the Velugumatla house demolitions were intended to clear land occupied by poor families and sell it to mobilise funds.
KTR also alleged that while poor residents were losing their homes, the Chief Minister was constructing a second palace in Hyderabad. He claimed that ₹9 crore was being spent on building a fort wall around the residence.
In addition, he accused other ministers of focusing on personal real estate interests. He alleged that one leader was constructing a third house, while another had floated multiple companies to earn commissions. However, he said the poor were being pushed onto the streets.
Calling the administration a real estate company rather than a government, KTR remarked that they were not ministers but real estate brokers. Consequently, the Velugumatla house demolitions have intensified the political confrontation in Telangana, with the opposition demanding accountability and relief for the affected families.
