MeitY launches 30 kW integrated drive system for EV boost

New Delhi: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology launched a 30 kW integrated drive system for electric vehicles, marking a push to strengthen indigenous power electronics manufacturing.

Shri S. Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY, unveiled the system at IIT Madras in Chennai on March 2. The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Thiruvananthapuram developed the technology with IIT Madras and Lucas TVS under the National Mission on Power Electronics Technology.

The 30 kW integrated drive system targets India’s fast-growing electric passenger vehicle segment, including compact cars and fleet mobility platforms. Currently, manufacturers import many high-performance EV powertrain systems and semiconductor-based drive components. Therefore, indigenous development aims to reduce import dependence and lower system costs through localisation.

Officials confirmed that engineers successfully designed, fabricated and validated the system with Lucas TVS. The technology is now ready for commercialisation and large-scale deployment. As a result, it can strengthen the domestic EV supply chain and create opportunities for MSMEs in power electronics, thermal systems and control hardware.

30 kW integrated drive system integrates motor and inverter

Shri S. Krishnan said the launch advanced India’s transition from a technology-importing nation to a technology-developing and exporting nation. He stated that the 30 kW integrated drive system combined the electric motor and inverter into a single compact, high power-density unit. Consequently, it replaced the conventional separated motor-drive configuration.

He added that design-led innovation would help create domestic intellectual property and accelerate the start-up ecosystem. Moreover, he said the initiative aligned with national programmes such as Production-Linked Incentive schemes and supported the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in electric mobility.

Shri E. Magesh, Director General, C-DAC, and Shri Manoj Kumar Jain, Group Coordinator (R&D in IT & CC& BT), MeitY, attended the event. Shri Ramanathan N S, CTO, Lucas TVS Chennai, Shri Renji V Chako, Senior Director, C-DAC, Thiruvananthapuram, Dr Om Krishan Singh, Scientist ‘E’, MeitY, and Prof Kamlesh Hatua of IIT Madras were also present.
