Hyderabad: Damodar Raja Narasimha reviewed the organ transplant policy framework in Telangana during a high-level meeting at the Secretariat. He examined its implementation under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act.
Senior health department officials and representatives of private hospitals attended the meeting. The minister discussed key issues related to transplant treatments and organ donation systems in the state.
He asked officials to simplify procedures to encourage more organ donations. In addition, he directed the department to develop a comprehensive framework to strengthen the organ transplant policy in Telangana.
The minister said the state should build an efficient system that could make Telangana a model for transplant services across the country.
Organ transplant policy review focuses on affordability and regulations
During the meeting, hospital representatives discussed the current organ donation system in the state. However, the minister expressed concern over the high costs of transplant procedures in private hospitals.
Therefore, he urged hospital managements to ensure reasonable pricing so that patients from ordinary families could access treatment. He also asked hospitals to prevent wastage of donated organs.
Officials further discussed the need for guidelines for foreign patients who travel to the state for transplant procedures.
The minister said the government had already granted permission to four hospitals to conduct hand transplant procedures in Telangana.
He also reviewed the implementation of the Clinical Establishments Act. The minister directed officials to ensure strict enforcement of the law across the state.
He added that treatment costs in private hospitals should not burden patients. Therefore, the government has begun efforts to regulate tariffs for medical services in the state.
Christina Z Chongthu, Director of Medical Education Narendra Kumar, Jeevandan director Sri Bhushan Raj and Ajay Kumar attended the meeting along with private hospital representatives.
