Hyderabad: The Telangana Assembly passed the parental care bill to strengthen legal protection for elderly parents and ensure accountability among children.
Social Welfare Minister Adluri Lakshman Kumar introduced the legislation, which the House approved. He said the law creates a statutory framework to safeguard the dignity and welfare of senior citizens.
The bill mandates care in healthcare, housing, and financial support. In addition, it empowers authorities to act in cases where neglect is reported.
Officials said the measure responds to changing social conditions. They noted that traditional family support systems have weakened in recent years.
Parental care bill ensures grievance redressal and monitoring
The legislation gives parents the legal right to seek maintenance from their children. Furthermore, it establishes a formal system to address complaints and disputes.
Authorities will implement monitoring mechanisms to ensure compliance with the law. Meanwhile, officials will intervene promptly when cases of neglect emerge.
Lakshman Kumar said caring for parents remains a moral duty. However, he stressed that legal backing is now necessary to enforce responsibility.
He added that the government introduced the measure under the guidance of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. Moreover, he described it as a key step in social reform.
The minister said the state will set up a structured monitoring system. In addition, officials will handle grievances to ensure timely action.
Consequently, the law aims to address rising cases of abandonment. It also seeks to promote responsibility within families across Telangana.
Lakshman Kumar said the government will continue efforts to protect elderly citizens. Overall, he described the legislation as a milestone in strengthening family support systems.
