Telangana remarks row: Ponnam seeks action against Tejasvi Surya

Hyderabad: Ponnam Prabhakar on Thursday demanded strict action against Tejasvi Surya over his recent remarks in Parliament, triggering a fresh political row in Telangana.

Speaking at Gandhi Bhavan, Prabhakar said the comments had hurt the sentiments of people in the State. He urged the MP to immediately withdraw the statements and issue a public apology. Moreover, he stressed that such remarks should not be taken lightly, as they concern the history and identity of Telangana.

Tejasvi Surya remarks spark political backlash

Prabhakar said the Congress party would soon submit a formal complaint to Om Birla. He added that the party would request appropriate disciplinary action, including expulsion from Parliament if necessary.

Furthermore, he demanded that the controversial statements be removed from official parliamentary records. According to him, the remarks disrespected not only the people but also those who sacrificed their lives during the Telangana statehood movement.

He also criticised the response of BJP representatives from the State. He said their silence in Parliament raised serious concerns. In contrast, he noted that other leaders had at least acknowledged the issue.

In addition, Prabhakar described the comments as an affront to constitutional values. He alleged that such statements reflect a lack of understanding of the democratic process behind Telangana’s formation.

“It is unfortunate that such remarks are made while elected representatives remain silent,” he said, adding that people are closely observing how leaders respond to sensitive issues.

He also called upon Narendra Modi to take cognisance of the matter. Meanwhile, he said the issue had been communicated to Rahul Gandhi for further action at the national level.

Finally, Prabhakar reiterated that accountability is essential in public life. He said appropriate action would help uphold the dignity of Parliament and respect for Telangana’s legacy.
