New Delhi: More than 5.36 lakh citizens have taken the national pledge under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment’s Ageing with Dignity campaign, reaffirming their commitment to respect, care and protect senior citizens across India.
Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Dr Virendra Kumar said respecting senior citizens is not only a social responsibility but also a national commitment to building an inclusive and compassionate India. He urged people to visit the Ministry’s Ageing with Dignity portal, take the pledge and contribute towards ensuring every elderly person lives with safety, dignity and respect.
The nationwide campaign complements the National Helpline for Senior Citizens, Elderline 14567, which provides assistance and support to elderly people across the country.
The toll-free helpline was dedicated to the nation on October 1, 2021. It operates seven days a week from 8 am to 8 pm across all States and Union Territories. It serves as a single-window platform for information, guidance, emotional support and field intervention.
Elderline 14567 supports national pledge through citizen services
Elderline offers information on healthcare facilities, old age homes, day-care centres, caregivers and elder-friendly products. It also provides guidance on legal issues, pensions, government schemes, maintenance matters and dispute resolution.
In addition, the helpline handles cases involving elder abuse, neglect, rescue operations, reunion of homeless senior citizens and emotional support for loneliness, anxiety, family disputes and other psychosocial concerns.
The national pledge encourages citizens to respect, love and care for senior citizens in their families and communities. It also calls on people to value their knowledge and experience, support their rights, oppose elder abuse and help create an inclusive society.
Participants receive a digital Certificate of Commitment after taking the pledge. The Ministry has urged citizens across the country to join the movement and support its vision of “Ageing with Dignity.”
