Army steps in to rescue youth stranded at Pocharam project

Hyderabad: Army personnel launched a rescue operation on Friday to save eight youth stranded for several days near the Pocharam project in Medak district. The group, from Lingampally village in Kamareddy’s Nagireddypet mandal, had gone to Haveli Ghanpur to buy Ganesh idols when floods cut off road connectivity.

While returning, an overflowing stream collapsed a bridge near Pocharam and trapped them at Pochampally. Residents said the youth spent days without food or proper shelter, which led to urgent appeals for help.

Flood-hit areas remain cut off as operations continue

Army teams responded on Friday morning with rescue equipment and coordinated with local authorities. They brought all eight youth to safety and shifted them to secure locations.

Heavy inflows into the Pocharam project pushed backwaters into nearby villages. The flooding damaged houses and fields, while high water levels made relief and transport extremely difficult.

Local residents welcomed the Army’s intervention. However, they warned that many interior villages in Medak and Kamareddy remained cut off. Authorities said they were monitoring the situation and preparing contingency plans for further evacuations if rains continued.
