New Delhi: Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inspected the Vande Bharat sleeper train at New Delhi Railway Station on Friday, stating that the country’s first such train was fully ready for operations.
During the visit, the Minister reviewed the sleeper coaches in detail. He examined the seating and berthing arrangements, interior layout and safety systems. He also assessed passenger convenience features built into the train.
The inspection focused strongly on passenger safety and comfort. Officials briefed the Minister on the train’s automatic doors, the KAVACH safety system and upgraded fire safety mechanisms. They also highlighted the installation of CCTV cameras in all coaches.
In addition, the train features onboard disinfectant technology to improve hygiene standards. Railway officials explained that designers paid special attention to toilet layouts. They said the new design prevents water splashes and supports better cleanliness during long journeys.
The Vande Bharat sleeper train will operate between Guwahati in Assam and Howrah in West Bengal. This route will mark a major step in overnight long-distance rail travel. Officials confirmed that the train has completed its full cycle of trials, testing and certification.

Vande Bharat sleeper train to be flagged off in January
The Vande Bharat sleeper train will be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January. Railway officials informed the Minister that all technical checks were complete. Therefore, they confirmed the train was ready for commercial service.
The Minister also interacted with railway officials during the inspection. He reviewed the technical configuration and operating readiness of the train. He noted that the sleeper version carried forward the core strengths of the Vande Bharat platform.
The train has a 16-coach formation. It includes 11 AC three-tier coaches, four AC two-tier coaches and one AC first-class coach. Together, these coaches can accommodate around 823 passengers.
Engineers designed the train to deliver superior ride quality. It features advanced suspension systems and ergonomic interiors. Officials said the train also meets high sanitation standards across all coaches.
Passengers will receive region-specific meals during the journey. The train starting from Guwahati will serve authentic Assamese dishes. Meanwhile, the service originating from Kolkata will offer traditional Bengali cuisine.
The Vande Bharat sleeper train has a design speed of up to 180 kmph. As a result, it combines modern amenities with faster travel times. Indian Railways said the project reflected its focus on passenger-centric services and technological innovation.
