New Delhi: The Archaeological Survey of India is carrying out monument conservation J&K at 56 centrally protected monuments across Jammu and Kashmir, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat informed the Rajya Sabha.
In a written reply on February 12, the Minister said ASI regularly undertakes conservation, preservation and protection works at sites under its jurisdiction in the Union Territory. Authorities carry out repair, restoration and structural stabilisation based on need and available resources.
Moreover, ASI has proposed the use of modern documentation tools for selected monuments. These include LiDAR mapping, GIS and drone-based surveys for the Group of Temples at Naranag, Sun Temple Martand and the Ancient Temple at Buniyar. The exercise aims to strengthen documentation and future conservation planning.
The agency has also proposed integrated and phased development of select heritage sites. The plan focuses on conservation, visitor amenities and heritage awareness.
For the financial year 2025-26, the government allocated ₹5.75 crore for works in Jammu and Kashmir. As of January 27, 2026, authorities had spent ₹4.97 crore.
List of sites under monument conservation J&K for 2025-26
ASI has planned conservation works at several monuments for completion during 2025-26. These include Akhnoor Fort in Jammu, Pratapswamin Temple in Tapper Baramulla, Avantisvara Temple in Avantipur, Hari Hara Shiva Temple in Billawar and Trilochan Nath Temple in Basholi.
Other sites include the Ancient Stupa, Monastery and Chaitya at Parihaspora, the Group of Arched Terraces at Pari Mahal in Srinagar, Sugandesha Temple in Baramulla and Mughal Arcade Verinag in Anantnag. Zaina-ul-Abdin’s Mother’s Tomb in Srinagar, Akhoon Mulla Shah Mosque and the Group of Temples at Naranag also figure on the list.
In addition, ASI has planned development works at Avantisvara Temple, Hari Hara Temple Billawar and Mughal Arcade Verinag. Authorities will upgrade pathways and install CCTV cameras at the Ancient Temple Martand. They will also improve toilet blocks and ticket counters at Avantiswamin Temple and upgrade fencing at the Ancient Palace in Ramnagar.
Through monument conservation J&K efforts, ASI aims to enhance public awareness, promote tourism and preserve the cultural heritage of the region.
