Bio-bitumen from agro waste marks milestone in India’s road sector: Nitin Gadkari

New Delhi: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said bio-bitumen made from agricultural waste marked a historic milestone in India’s road infrastructure, as the country became the first in the world to commercially produce the material.

Speaking at CSIR’s technology transfer ceremony titled “From Farm Residue to Road: Bio-Bitumen via Pyrolysis”, Gadkari said agricultural waste could be converted into a valuable national resource. He said bio-bitumen aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 by reducing pollution caused by crop burning and strengthening the circular economy.

The minister said blending 15% bio-bitumen could help India save nearly ₹4,500 crore in foreign exchange. He added that it would also reduce dependence on imported crude oil and support environmentally responsible growth.

Gadkari congratulated CSIR and its scientists for achieving the breakthrough. He also thanked Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh for his support in taking the technology towards commercial production.

Bio-bitumen seen as boost to farmers and rural economy

Gadkari said the innovation would empower farmers by creating value from farm residue. He added that it would generate rural livelihoods and provide a fresh push to the rural economy.

He said bio-bitumen reflected the government’s commitment to sustainable development and self-reliance. According to him, the initiative would help build cleaner and greener road infrastructure while supporting farmers and reducing environmental damage.

The minister said such technologies showed how innovation could link agriculture, industry and infrastructure. He added that India’s leadership in bio-bitumen production placed the country at the forefront of global efforts in sustainable road construction.
