BJP MLA remarks on Indira Gandhi trigger Assembly uproar

Hyderabad: A political controversy broke out in the Assembly after a BJP MLA made remarks about Indira Gandhi, triggering protests and disruption.

The Indira Gandhi remarks row began during a discussion on the Ippapuvu Sara issue. BJP MLA Paidi Rakesh Reddy suggested naming the scheme after “Tequila” or another alternative instead of the former Prime Minister.

Treasury bench ministers immediately objected to the comments. Their protests led to disorder in the House.

Several ministers, including Seethakka, Ponnam Prabhakar and Vakiti Srihari, strongly condemned the remarks. They demanded an unconditional apology from the BJP MLA.

Speaker Gaddam Prasad intervened to restore order. He later directed that the controversial comments be removed from official records.

Minister for Legislative Affairs Sridhar Babu said the remarks insulted the legacy of Indira Gandhi. He described them as inappropriate for legislative proceedings.

Political reactions intensify

Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said such comments disrespected women leaders. He stressed that the Assembly must uphold dignity in debates.

The exchange heightened tensions between the ruling party and the BJP. It also added to the charged atmosphere during the ongoing session.

Although proceedings resumed later, the controversy continued to draw strong political reactions beyond the House.
