BRS targets Congress rule through street play at Telangana Bhavan

Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi used a street play protest at Telangana Bhavan to allege constitutional violations and governance failures under the Congress-led government in Telangana.

Students from Hyderabad Central University performed the play, which the BRS said exposed what it described as double standards by the Congress leadership on constitutional values. Through satire and symbolism, the performance highlighted alleged corruption, administrative failures and erosion of democratic norms in the state.

From the opening scenes, the street play targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. The students portrayed Rahul Gandhi’s public projection as a defender of the Constitution alongside what they described as actions by the Telangana government that undermined constitutional principles. Scenes depicted allegations of attempts to lure legislators, attacks on SC and ST students, and political opportunism.

The play also focused on what were described as governance lapses under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. The performers dramatized allegations of financial inducements to legislators, land-related controversies, unfulfilled election promises and diversion of public funds to non-essential activities.

The performance included references to actions taken under the HYDRA banner and the Lagacharla land acquisition issue involving tribal communities. It also criticised spending on sporting events while, according to the performers, public welfare needs remained unmet.

A central visual element showed “Mother Constitution” in chains. The students said this symbolised shrinking space for constitutional governance in Telangana. Through this portrayal, the play conveyed anguish over what it described as systematic damage to democratic norms. It concluded with a message that citizens would ultimately reclaim and protect the Constitution.

BRS Working President K T Rama Rao, senior party leaders, party workers and journalists watched the performance. After the play ended, they gave the students a standing ovation. KTR personally congratulated the performers and praised their use of theatre to reflect current political issues.
