BSNL launches VoWiFi services nationwide across all circles

New Delhi: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited announced that it had launched BSNL VoWiFi services across all telecom circles in the country, enabling customers to make voice calls over Wi-Fi networks from January 1.

BSNL said the nationwide rollout of Voice over WiFi, also known as Wi-Fi Calling, would help customers stay connected even in locations with weak mobile signals. Therefore, users can make and receive calls and messages through Wi-Fi networks in homes, offices, basements, and remote areas.

According to the state-owned telecom operator, BSNL VoWiFi services allow customers to use their existing mobile numbers and handset dialers. Moreover, the service does not require any third-party applications, making activation simple for users.

BSNL explained that VoWiFi works on an IP Multimedia Subsystem platform and supports seamless handovers between Wi-Fi and mobile networks. As a result, ongoing calls can continue without disruption when users move between network types.

BSNL VoWiFi services to aid rural and remote connectivity

The company said BSNL VoWiFi services would especially benefit customers in rural and remote regions where mobile coverage remains limited. However, the service requires a stable Wi-Fi connection, including BSNL Bharat Fiber or other broadband services.

In addition, BSNL stated that VoWiFi would help reduce congestion on mobile networks. The company clarified that it is offering the service free of cost, with no additional charges for Wi-Fi-based calls.

BSNL said the nationwide launch marked a key milestone in its network modernisation programme. Meanwhile, the company reiterated its commitment to improving telecom connectivity in underserved and difficult-to-reach areas.

The telecom operator added that most modern smartphones already support VoWiFi services. Customers only need to enable the Wi-Fi Calling option in their handset settings to start using the feature.

For device compatibility and technical support, BSNL advised customers to visit the nearest customer service centre or contact the BSNL helpline at 18001503.
