New Delhi: The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) on February 12 cleared defence acquisition proposals worth about Rs 3.60 lakh crore to enhance the combat readiness of the armed forces.
Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh chaired the meeting. The Council accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for multiple proposals across the Services.
For the Indian Air Force, the DAC approved procurement of Multi Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) {Rafale}, Combat Missiles and Air-Ship Based High Altitude Pseudo Satellite (AS-HAPS). The MRFA procurement will strengthen air dominance across the conflict spectrum. Moreover, it will enhance long-range offensive strike capability and deterrence. Most of these fighter aircraft will be manufactured in India.
The Combat Missiles will improve stand-off ground attack capability with deep strike precision. In addition, the AS-HAPS platform will support persistent Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions. It will also aid electronic intelligence, telecommunication and remote sensing for military use.
Services receive major defence acquisition proposals approvals
For the Indian Army, the DAC cleared procurement of Anti-Tank Mines (Vibhav). These mines will act as obstacles to delay enemy mechanised forces. The Council also approved overhaul of Armoured Recovery Vehicles, T-72 Tanks and Infantry Combat Vehicles (BMP-II). Consequently, the Army will extend the service life of key platforms and improve operational readiness.
For the Indian Navy, the DAC granted AoN for a 04 MW Marine Gas Turbine based Electric Power Generator. This induction under the Make-I category of DAP 2020 will reduce dependence on foreign manufacturers. The Council also approved procurement of P8I Long Range Maritime Reconnaissance Aircraft. Therefore, the Navy will strengthen anti-submarine warfare, maritime surveillance and strike capability.
For the Indian Coast Guard, the Council cleared procurement of Electro-Optical and Infra-Red systems for Dornier aircraft. As a result, the Coast Guard will enhance its maritime surveillance capability.
The approvals underline the government’s focus on indigenisation and strengthening national security through timely defence acquisition proposals.
