Department of Posts activates 887 ATMs across India to expand banking access

New Delhi: The Department of Posts on Tuesday activated 887 ATMs across India after completing a nationwide revamp of its ATM infrastructure to improve access to basic banking services.

The department installed these ATMs at post offices located in urban, semi-urban and rural regions. As a result, citizens can now access banking facilities closer to their homes. Officials said the move aimed to make services easier, faster and more user-friendly.

Moreover, the initiative focuses strongly on rural and underserved areas where access to bank branches remains limited. By strengthening digital banking touchpoints, the Department of Posts is supporting the government’s broader goal of financial inclusion through technology-driven solutions.

Customers can use Department of Posts ATMs to withdraw cash, check account balances and carry out other essential banking transactions. Therefore, users can reduce dependence on distant branches and avoid unnecessary travel. This change is expected to save time and lower costs for customers.

Expanded ATM network to improve grassroots banking access

Officials said the expanded ATM network would particularly benefit rural households, senior citizens and daily wage earners. In addition, locating ATMs within post office premises builds trust among users who already rely on postal services for savings and payments.

India Post plays a critical role in delivering banking services through its vast postal network. With the activation of new ATMs, post offices will function as convenient financial access points. Consequently, customers can combine postal and banking needs at one location.

The initiative also supports digital literacy by encouraging citizens to use self-service banking options. Over time, officials expect increased adoption of cashless and digital transactions at the local level.

The department urged citizens to actively use ATM facilities available at post offices across the country. According to officials, this expansion will further strengthen India Post’s position as a key partner in delivering inclusive banking services.

The Department of Posts said it would continue upgrading infrastructure and expanding services to meet growing customer needs. With this push, postal banking is expected to play a stronger role in India’s financial ecosystem.
