Hyderabad: G. Kishan Reddy criticised the dismissal of disqualification petitions against two Telangana MLAs and accused the state government of weakening democratic values.
He reacted after Gaddam Prasad Kumar dismissed petitions filed against MLAs Danam Nagender and Kadiyam Srihari. According to Kishan Reddy, granting them a clean chit ignored the people’s mandate.
The Union minister alleged that both the Indian National Congress and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi had followed similar practices on political defections.
He questioned why the Speaker overlooked what he described as clear evidence that an MLA elected on the BRS symbol later changed political allegiance and contested the parliamentary election on a Congress ticket.
Disqualification petitions row sparks criticism from Kishan Reddy
Kishan Reddy said the Speaker should prevent defections instead of legitimising them through such decisions. Therefore, he described the move as a dark chapter in democratic history.
He also accused the ruling party in Telangana of misusing constitutional institutions for political purposes.
According to him, political leaders were treating the people’s verdict like a commodity for positions and power. He added that such actions weaken public trust in democratic processes.
The Union minister said citizens across the state were closely observing these developments. He warned that those who disregard the Constitution and democratic mandate would ultimately face public accountability.
