Droupadi Murmu emphasises artisans’ legacy and national contribution
The President noted that India’s centuries-old handicraft heritage has survived because artisans have adapted their skills to evolving times while preserving the essence of tradition. She said their creations carry the fragrance of the country’s soil.
Highlighting the economic significance of handicrafts, she said the sector provides livelihood to more than 3.2 million people, many of whom live in rural and remote regions. By decentralising employment, handicrafts promote inclusive development. She added that the sector has long supported weaker sections of society and contributes to women’s empowerment, with women forming 68 percent of the workforce.
The President also underlined the sector’s eco-friendly nature, pointing out that handicrafts rely on natural and local resources and have a low-carbon footprint. At a time when sustainable lifestyles are gaining importance worldwide, this industry’s contribution is even more relevant.
She welcomed the growing recognition brought by the GI tag and encouraged stakeholders to secure GI status for unique products. She said that initiatives like One District One Product enhance the global visibility of regional crafts.
President Murmu stated that generations of knowledge and hard work have earned Indian handicrafts a strong global identity. She added that rising demand offers opportunities for young entrepreneurs and designers to establish enterprises.
