New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu presented the National Awards for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities for 2025 in New Delhi on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. She emphasised that Divyangjan deserve equality and that their active participation is essential for meaningful national development. In addition, she underlined that all stakeholders share the responsibility of ensuring equal involvement of Divyangjan. Referring to this year’s theme, “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress”, she said it reflects a progressive national vision.
The President noted that India is steadily adopting a rights-based and dignity-focused approach for persons with disabilities. She also highlighted that inclusion of Divyangjan continues to remain a central part of the country’s development journey. Moreover, she recalled the 2015 decision to adopt the respectful term “Divyangjan” to recognise the dignity of persons with disabilities.

She added that the government is strengthening the empowerment ecosystem through national-level institutions engaged in sign language research, mental health rehabilitation, and sports training. Furthermore, she explained that millions of Divyangjan now possess Unique Disability ID cards, enabling easier access to specialised facilities.
President Murmu encouraged society to remain vigilant and proactive in upholding the rights of Divyangjan. She stressed that every citizen must contribute to ensuring dignity, self-reliance, and self-respect for persons with disabilities. Ultimately, she urged people to treat Divyangjan as partners in advancing social and national progress.
