New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu attended the FDDI Convocation Ceremony in New Delhi on Monday, where she emphasized India’s rising economic capabilities and growing self-reliance. She noted that the Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade has identified the footwear sector as a ‘Champion Sector’ under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. According to her remarks, the government is encouraging investment by strengthening the industrial ecosystem.
Key sector insights underscored at the FDDI Convocation Ceremony
The President highlighted that India ranks second globally in footwear production and consumption. She shared that during the 2024–25 fiscal year, footwear exports crossed 2500 million US dollars, while imports reached approximately 680 million dollars. This export–import ratio, she said, establishes India as a leading exporter, although expanding the footwear business remains crucial for creating more entrepreneurial and employment opportunities for the graduating students.

President Murmu also welcomed the signing of an MoU between the Footwear Design and Development Institute and the University of Northampton. She stated that the partnership deepens cooperation between India and the United Kingdom under the Free Trade Agreement and places special focus on sustainable materials and circular economy practices. These aspects reflect both countries’ commitment to environmental conservation.
In her address to the graduating students, the President advised them to build careers with a broad vision. She encouraged them to design footwear that enhances health and functionality, supports employment generation, expands participation for marginalised groups, strengthens national exports, and contributes to the broader goal of a self-reliant India.
