First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train to run between Guwahati and Howrah

New Delhi: Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on January 1 that the first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train would operate between Guwahati in Assam and Howrah in West Bengal.

Speaking at a meeting at Rail Bhawan in New Delhi, the minister said Indian Railways had successfully completed all trials, testing, and certification for the new sleeper service. Moreover, he said Prime Minister Narendra Modi would flag it off on this route later in January.

The minister described the launch as a major milestone for Indian Railways and rail passengers. He added that 2026 would witness wide-ranging passenger-centric reforms across the rail network.

According to the ministry, the sleeper service will benefit Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon districts in Assam. It will also serve Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Maldah, Murshidabad, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, and Howrah districts in West Bengal.

Indian Railways will operate the train with 16 coaches and a total passenger capacity of around 823. The configuration includes 11 three-tier AC coaches, four two-tier AC coaches, and one first-class AC coach.

Shri Vaishnaw said engineers developed a completely new bogie with advanced suspension. Therefore, the design delivers improved ride comfort, better stability, and reduced noise during overnight travel.

The service includes KAVACH safety technology, CCTV cameras in all coaches, emergency talk-back units, and upgraded fire detection and suppression systems. Moreover, special arrangements have been made for Divyangjan passengers, along with improved sanitation systems.

The timetable has been planned to allow evening departures and early-morning arrivals. As a result, passengers will get a faster and more comfortable overnight travel option.

Passengers will also receive region-specific meals during the journey. Services originating from Guwahati will offer Assamese cuisine, while those starting from Howrah will serve traditional Bengali dishes.

Indian Railways said the new sleeper service marked a new phase in overnight rail travel. It reflects the organisation’s focus on speed, comfort, regional connectivity, and modern passenger amenities.
