Hyderabad: GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan said Hyderabad had emerged as a mega city following the merger of 27 municipalities into the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.
The Commissioner made the statement on Friday after inaugurating the newly established Rajendranagar and Golkonda Zonal Commissioner offices. During the event, Anurag Jayanti assumed charge as Zonal Commissioner of Rajendranagar, while G. Mukunda Reddy took charge as Zonal Commissioner of Golkonda.
Explaining the impact of the GHMC expansion, Karnan said the city’s jurisdiction grew sharply, with the municipal area increasing from 650 square kilometres to 2,053 square kilometres. He added that the expansion required major administrative restructuring to ensure effective governance.
To manage the larger area, the State government increased the number of GHMC wards from 150 to 300. At the same time, authorities doubled the number of zones from six to 12 and expanded the number of circles from 30 to 60.
Karnan said the government created new zones at Uppal, Quthbullapur, Malkajgiri, Shamshabad, Golkonda and Rajendranagar as part of the reorganisation.
GHMC expansion aims to improve civic service delivery
According to the Commissioner, the establishment of additional zonal and circle offices would bring civic administration closer to residents. He said the move would also help officials respond faster to public grievances.
Moreover, Karnan said the expanded administrative structure would accelerate development works across the city. He added that decentralised governance remained critical for managing Hyderabad’s rapid growth following the GHMC expansion.
Officials said the new zonal offices would play a key role in improving service delivery, infrastructure planning and urban development in the newly added areas.
