GHMC organises IIT exposure visit for sanitation workers’ children

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation announced an IIT Hyderabad exposure visit for children of sanitation workers, following directions issued by Commissioner RV Karnan.

Officials said the programme, scheduled for January 31, was designed to introduce students from Classes 6 to 10 to one of the country’s premier institutes. Moreover, the initiative aimed to expand academic aspirations among children whose families worked in sanitation services across GHMC circles.

The commissioner directed civic officials to ensure full coordination for the visit. As a result, the schedule included interactions with IIT Hyderabad faculty and students, guided tours of academic blocks, libraries and innovation centres, and structured motivational sessions.

The initiative marked the first such organised exposure visit for many participants. Consequently, officials said it sought to convert curiosity into confidence through direct engagement with a world-class learning environment.

Programme details of the IIT Hyderabad exposure visit

GHMC organised the IIT Hyderabad exposure visit in collaboration with the institute’s Entrepreneurship Cell. In addition, the civic body arranged transport, meals, safety measures and mentoring support for all students.

Officials stated that special care was taken to create a welcoming atmosphere for the children. Furthermore, the programme focused on ensuring dignity and equal opportunity, rather than a symbolic campus tour.

A senior GHMC official said the initiative reflected the corporation’s belief in inclusive education. “Our sanitation workers keep the city clean. Therefore, their children must also see pathways to excellence,” the official added.

In a statement, Commissioner RV Karnan said, “Our sanitation workers are the backbone of Hyderabad. Through this initiative, we want to tell their children that their future is just as important as anyone else’s. This exposure visit is a small but meaningful step to help them believe in themselves and dream without limits.”
