Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation will conduct a GHMC e-waste drive across all 300 wards of the city on January 12 and 13 to promote safe disposal and scientific processing of electronic waste, Commissioner R.V. Karnan said on Friday.
The drive forms part of the Swachh Bharat Mission and aims to create public awareness on responsible e-waste management. According to GHMC officials, the initiative will cover residential areas, commercial establishments and public spaces across Hyderabad. Moreover, the corporation has planned systematic collection to ensure proper recycling and disposal.
The GHMC e-waste drive will collect a wide range of discarded electronic items. These include refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, computers, mobile phones, televisions, batteries, UPS systems, power banks and other electronic appliances. Officials said scientific processing would follow collection to prevent environmental damage.
GHMC e-waste drive backed by awareness campaigns and publicity
Ahead of the drive, sanitation staff have begun awareness campaigns in coordination with resident welfare associations, non-governmental organisations and women from self-help groups. Meanwhile, GHMC has identified temporary e-waste collection centres in every ward to make participation easier for citizens.
Commissioner Karnan directed zonal commissioners, deputy commissioners and sanitation officials to ensure smooth execution of the programme. In addition, GHMC has intensified citywide publicity to maximise public participation.
Field-level awareness drives using public address systems are underway across all zones and circles. Officials said these campaigns aim to educate citizens about the importance of safe e-waste disposal and the environmental risks of improper handling.
The GHMC urged residents to actively participate in the GHMC e-waste drive and contribute to a cleaner and safer city.
