HYDRAA to expand Hyderabad lakes CCTV monitoring with 185 new camera sites

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) is extending its surveillance network by launching CCTV monitoring across 185 lakes in the city. The agency has floated tenders to install solar-powered 4G IP cameras for round-the-clock monitoring.

This step builds on previous efforts that began with monitoring lakes along the Outer Ring Road (ORR). HYDRAA’s survey identified 549 lakes across Hyderabad. Out of these, 411 received preliminary notifications, and 138 have been given final notifications under environmental and urban safety regulations.

Hyderabad lakes CCTV monitoring ties ecology with urban safety

Currently, 70 lakes are monitored 24/7 with seven security personnel deployed per lake. HYDRAA recruited 400 guards through outsourcing, providing them with basic training before deployment in shifts.

Officials explained that consistent surveillance not only curbs illegal encroachments but also plays a key role in managing stormwater. Proper lake protection helps prevent flash floods and waterlogging, especially during monsoons. Furthermore, these lakes act as crucial ecological buffers in Hyderabad’s rapidly urbanizing environment.

In addition to surveillance, the agency is also undertaking beautification and restoration of key lakes. Boating has been introduced at Batkamma Kunta and Nallagandla Lake. Similar upgrades are underway at Sanam Lake, Thammidi Kunta, Uppal Nalla Lake, and Bum Rukn-ud-Doula Lake.

Experts emphasise that this integrated approach combines ecological conservation with urban planning. As Hyderabad expands, preserving its lakes is increasingly vital for both environmental balance and civic resilience.
