New Delhi: ICGS Vigraha has begun its operational visit to Jakarta as part of its ASEAN deployment. The visit runs from December 2 to 5, 2025. During this period, personnel from the Indian Coast Guard and the Indonesian Coast Guard (BAKAMLA) will take part in professional interactions, tabletop exercises, shipboard drills and joint training. The visit also highlights the growing need for Coast Guard cooperation in maritime safety, security and environmental protection.
Officials said the engagements will focus on Maritime Law Enforcement, Marine Pollution Response and Maritime Search and Rescue. Both agencies work across large Exclusive Economic Zones and busy sea routes. Therefore, joint activities aim to improve interoperability against illegal fishing, piracy, trafficking and other threats. A Passage Exercise will also strengthen coordination, communication and seamanship.
ICGS Vigraha visit designed to deepen operational coordination with Indonesia
The visit includes courtesy calls, ship visits, yoga sessions and sports events. It also features exchanges at maritime training centres. These efforts seek to strengthen ties and build camaraderie among personnel. Both India and Indonesia support a Rules-Based International Order in the Indo-Pacific, and Coast Guard engagement turns this principle into action at sea.
A key element of India–Indonesia cooperation is the 2020 Memorandum of Understanding between the Indian Coast Guard and BAKAMLA. The MoU created a structured framework for joint law enforcement, coordinated patrols, Search and Rescue, pollution response, information sharing and capacity building. Since then, both sides have conducted regular interactions, shared best practices and improved interoperability.
Authorities said the partnership has grown through high-level visits, bilateral training exchanges and coordinated patrols. Indonesian personnel now attend capacity-building programmes run by the Indian Coast Guard, while ICG ship visits support cross-deck training. The presence of ICGS Vigraha in Jakarta signals India’s commitment to regional maritime security and its readiness to assist partners.
After completing the Jakarta leg, ICGS Vigraha will sail to Port Klang in Malaysia. This next phase continues its wider ASEAN deployment and aims to deepen engagement, strengthen response mechanisms and support stability across the Indo-Pacific.
