India, Brazil strengthen telecom ties in bilateral meeting

New Delhi: India–Brazil telecom cooperation received fresh momentum as Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya M. Scindia held a bilateral meeting with Brazil’s Communications Minister Frederico de Siqueira Filho to advance collaboration in telecommunications and digital infrastructure.

The discussions highlighted digital connectivity as a cornerstone of inclusive growth and technological sovereignty. As key partners in the BRICS framework, both countries emphasised resilient and future-ready digital ecosystems.

Scindia outlined India’s achievements in expanding affordable connectivity over the past decade. He noted that India offers among the lowest global data tariffs and continues to strengthen inclusive access through policy reforms. Moreover, he highlighted satellite communications as a strategic priority for remote connectivity and disaster response.

The Minister also briefed the Brazilian delegation on the progress of BharatNet, one of the world’s largest rural optical fibre projects connecting Gram Panchayats nationwide. In addition, he referred to India Stack initiatives such as Aadhaar and Unified Payments Interface, which have driven exponential growth in digital transactions.

During the meeting, both sides identified 5G use cases, 6G research, quantum communications and cybersecurity as priority areas. Scindia noted India’s establishment of 100 5G use-case laboratories to promote innovation and industry–academia collaboration. He also expressed readiness to strengthen joint efforts in secure networks and telecom fraud prevention.

The Brazilian Minister shared updates on Brazil’s digital inclusion initiatives, including a major fibre rollout in the Amazon region and the success of the PIX digital payments platform. He expressed interest in India’s Digital Bharat Nidhi funding model for rural connectivity.

Furthermore, both ministers agreed to intensify structured engagement through a formal Memorandum of Understanding. They proposed regular consultations, a joint work plan and identification of nodal agencies to ensure measurable outcomes.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmed commitment to inclusive, innovation-driven and secure digital transformation, reinforcing India–Brazil telecom cooperation as a key pillar of their broader strategic partnership.
