Government achieved 73% domestic fertilizer production in 2025

New Delhi: The Government of India said nearly 73 percent of the country’s fertilizer requirement was met through domestic fertilizer production in 2025, marking a major step in reducing import dependence.

The Government stated that the milestone aligned with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision and helped ensure uninterrupted fertilizer supply to farmers. It added that fertilizer security remained a priority amid global supply uncertainties. As a result, authorities focused on long-term raw material agreements and diversified sourcing strategies to protect domestic availability.

Domestic fertilizer output has risen steadily over the past five years. Total production increased from 433.29 lakh tonnes in 2021 to 467.87 lakh tonnes in 2022. It then climbed sharply to 507.93 lakh tonnes in 2023. The growth continued in 2024 with 509.57 lakh tonnes produced.

Policies driving domestic fertilizer production growth

Production touched an all-time high of 524.62 lakh tonnes in 2025, covering urea, DAP, NPKs and SSP. The Government attributed this rise in domestic fertilizer production to new plants, revival of closed units and stronger indigenous manufacturing. In addition, assured access to raw materials improved capacity and stability across the sector.

The Government said these measures strengthened the resilience and sustainability of the fertilizer industry. It also reiterated its commitment to support farmers with timely and affordable inputs. According to officials, further policy support would continue to back agricultural growth while reinforcing fertilizer security.
