India Kenya agriculture talks held virtually

New Delhi: India and Kenya held the first India Kenya agriculture talks under the Joint Working Group framework through virtual mode on February 24, 2026.

Shri Ajeet Kumar Sahu, Joint Secretary (IC), Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, co-chaired the meeting with Stephen Rono from Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs. The engagement marked a formal step to strengthen bilateral cooperation in agriculture and allied sectors.

During the discussions, officials from both countries shared their current priorities and policy focus areas. They also outlined key challenges facing their agricultural sectors and identified emerging initiatives that require collaboration. Therefore, both sides stressed the need to deepen partnerships across research and innovation platforms.

The delegations held detailed deliberations on agricultural research, market access and farm mechanisation. In addition, they examined opportunities for capacity building and training initiatives. Officials agreed that structured cooperation could help improve productivity and resilience in both countries.

The meeting also reviewed avenues for collaboration in natural resource management and crop development. Moreover, participants explored knowledge exchange in post-harvest management and extension services.

Senior officials from multiple divisions of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare attended the meeting. Representatives from the Crops Division, Mechanisation and Technology Division, Natural Resource Management Division, Plant Protection Division and Extension Division participated. Officials from the High Commission of India in Kenya and the Ministry of External Affairs were also present.

Both sides described the discussions as constructive and forward-looking. They agreed to maintain regular engagement under the Joint Working Group mechanism. Consequently, the dialogue is expected to provide a platform for expanding cooperation in agricultural development.

The virtual format enabled focused exchanges while setting the stage for future in-person interactions between the two governments.
