Government expands India refining capacity and clean fuel mission
New Delhi: The Government outlined major steps to strengthen India’s refining capacity and advance clean fuel initiatives. Official information shows the current refining capacity at 258.1 million metric tonne per annum. With ongoing and planned refinery projects, the capacity will rise to 309.5 MMTPA by 2030. Public sector refineries will also increase their Petrochemical Intensity Index from 4.1 to about 9.3 once the projects conclude.
Clean energy schemes aligned with rising India refining capacity
The Government is running several programmes to expand the use of biofuels, green hydrogen, and LNG. These measures form part of a national strategy aimed at improving energy security and supporting a low-carbon transition.
Under the Ethanol Blending Programme, the Government is working toward 20 percent ethanol blending. It is also widening feedstock availability to support this goal. Through the PM JI-VAN Yojana, it offers financial assistance for advanced biofuel projects, including sustainable aviation fuel.
Furthermore, the SATAT scheme promotes compressed biogas. Supporting schemes such as BAM and DPI help with biomass aggregation and link CBG plants to existing pipelines.
National missions and fuel expansion
The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to produce 5 MMTPA of green hydrogen by 2030. Along with this, the Government is expanding LNG availability by developing LNG terminals and setting up LNG stations across sectors.
Broader use of biofuels, green hydrogen, and LNG will reduce emissions in transport, cement, steel, and other hard-to-abate industries. These fuels will also help lower emission intensity and push India toward a low-carbon economy in line with national climate goals and global commitments.
