New Delhi: India and Vietnam discussed ways to strengthen bilateral engagement as part of ongoing India Vietnam cooperation during a meeting between senior officials in New Delhi.
Vietnam’s Deputy Minister for Ethnic and Religious Affairs Y. Thong called on Chandra Shekhar Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Minority Affairs, during his visit to India. The meeting reviewed long-standing civilisational ties and shared cultural heritage between the two countries.
Officials noted that India and Vietnam share deep historical links rooted in Buddhism and strong people-to-people connections. These links continue to play an important role in strengthening India Vietnam cooperation.
During the interaction, Kumar welcomed the Vietnamese delegation and appreciated the Deputy Minister’s participation in the Bharat Tribes Festival 2026. He also described Vietnam as a key partner in India’s Act East Policy.
Kumar emphasised that India attaches high priority to its trusted relationship with Vietnam. He highlighted that shared Buddhist traditions continue to serve as a strong cultural bridge between the two societies.

India Vietnam cooperation highlighted in strategic partnership anniversary
Both sides also discussed the tenth year of the India–Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Officials said the milestone marks an important phase in expanding India Vietnam cooperation across sectors.
They agreed that cultural and heritage connections should play a central role in commemorating the partnership anniversary. As a result, both countries are planning several engagements and activities throughout the year.
Kumar also recalled the public exposition of the Sacred Relics of Lord Buddha from Sarnath in Vietnam in 2025. The event drew millions of devotees and reflected the strong spiritual link between the two nations.
Officials said the meeting took place in a warm and cordial atmosphere. The interaction highlighted mutual trust, respect and the long-standing friendship that continues to guide India–Vietnam relations.
The Ministry of Minority Affairs reiterated its commitment to supporting minority welfare and development through policy initiatives and outreach programmes.
