India records highest wind energy addition of 6.05 GW in FY26

New Delhi: Wind energy India achieved a record milestone with the addition of 6.05 GW capacity during FY 2025–26, marking the highest-ever annual growth in the sector.

This surpasses the previous high recorded in FY 2016–17 and reflects a sharp 46% increase compared to FY 2024–25. As a result, the country’s cumulative installed wind power capacity has now crossed 56 GW.

Wind energy India growth driven by policy and investment

The strong performance highlights renewed momentum in the renewable energy sector. Several factors, including policy clarity, improved transmission infrastructure and competitive tariffs, have contributed to this growth.

Moreover, key states such as Gujarat, Karnataka and Maharashtra led capacity additions during the year. These regions benefited from a growing pipeline of hybrid wind-solar projects.

In addition, government initiatives such as concessional customs duty, waiver of Inter-State Transmission System charges and renewable consumption obligations have supported expansion.

Renewable targets and future outlook

The milestone strengthens India’s renewable energy portfolio and supports its long-term sustainability goals. Notably, the country aims to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030.

Furthermore, institutions like the National Institute of Wind Energy continue to provide technical support to enhance project efficiency and deployment.

Overall, the steady rise of wind power reflects decades of policy evolution since the 1990s. It also positions India among the leading global markets in renewable energy.
