New Delhi: Indian Railways has approved projects worth ₹1,364.45 crore to strengthen safety, signalling and communication systems across multiple zones.
The initiative focuses on Kavach deployment, optical fibre upgrades and modern signalling systems. As a result, it aims to enhance operational safety and efficiency across high-density routes.
Kavach deployment expanded across railway zones
Under the plan, 232 locomotives in Southern Railway will be equipped with Kavach Version 4.0 at a cost of ₹208.81 crore.
In addition, North Central Railway will see optical fibre cable installation over 2,196 route kilometres. This upgrade will support advanced safety systems and ensure reliable communication.
Moreover, the expansion forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen train collision avoidance mechanisms.
Communication backbone and signalling modernisation
Northern Railway will receive ₹400.86 crore for upgrading its communication backbone. The plan includes laying 2×48 fibre OFC networks across more than 3,200 route kilometres.
Furthermore, South Central Railway will implement electronic interlocking systems at 49 stations with an outlay of ₹578.02 crore.
These upgrades will replace manual panel interlocking systems. Consequently, they will reduce human intervention and improve signalling reliability.
Focus on safety and efficiency
The projects are part of a larger modernisation effort aimed at improving safety and capacity. Enhanced signalling systems and robust communication networks will support faster and more reliable train operations.
Overall, the initiative reflects Indian Railways’ continued push towards technology-driven infrastructure. It also reinforces its commitment to safer and more efficient rail travel across the country.
