Indian Railways ran 244 special trains during Mauni Amavasya

New Delhi: Indian Railways ran 244 special trains across the country during the Mauni Amavasya period, carrying more than 4.5 lakh passengers between January 3 and January 18, 2026, officials said on Monday.

The railways deployed additional services to manage heavy passenger movement during the religious occasion. Northern Railway operated 31 trains, while North Central Railway ran 158 services. North Eastern Railway operated 55 trains during the period.

Officials said the railways planned the operations carefully to ensure safe and smooth travel for devotees. They added that coordination across zones helped avoid congestion and delays during peak days.

Railway officials said the operation reflected efficient planning and optimal use of resources during high-demand periods.

Prayagraj operations handled peak Mauni Amavasya rush

On January 18, Prayagraj recorded the highest passenger movement during Mauni Amavasya. Indian Railways operated 40 additional services on that day and carried around 1 lakh passengers.

Of these, Northern Railway ran 11 trains, North Central Railway operated 22 services, and North Eastern Railway managed seven trains. Officials said all regular passenger trains continued to run on schedule.

The railways said the smooth movement showed effective traffic management and coordination between zones. They added that technology-driven planning helped handle large crowds without disrupting routine services.

Indian Railways said it would continue to strengthen planning and coordination to manage large-scale passenger movement during festivals and peak travel seasons.
