Cabinet clears Madurai International Airport status in Tamil Nadu

New Delhi: Union Cabinet, chaired by Narendra Modi, approved the declaration of Madurai Airport in Tamil Nadu as the Madurai International Airport on Monday. The decision formalised the airport’s upgraded status and cleared the way for expanded global connectivity.

The move aimed to strengthen air links for southern districts of Tamil Nadu. Officials said the new status would help attract more international flights. As a result, tourism, trade, and regional business activity are expected to increase.

Madurai Airport is located in the historic temple city of Madurai. It is among the oldest airports in the state. Over the years, it has served as a key aviation hub for southern Tamil Nadu.

The airport already handles domestic services and limited international operations. However, the formal declaration now recognises its wider strategic role in regional connectivity and economic development.

Madurai International Airport expected to boost tourism and trade

Officials said the Madurai International Airport designation would strengthen pilgrimage travel. The city attracts large numbers of devotees every year due to its historic temples and cultural sites.

In addition, authorities expect the airport to draw international pilgrims and investors. Improved connectivity could support local industries, tourism operators, and export businesses across southern Tamil Nadu.

The Cabinet noted that the city’s historical and cultural prominence makes it a strong candidate for expanded international aviation services. The decision therefore aims to accelerate economic growth in the wider region.
