Hyderabad: The Mahalakshmi free bus scheme has helped women commuters save over ₹10,000 crore, with more than 290 crore free journeys recorded since its launch on December 9, 2023, according to Telangana State Road Transport Corporation.
Over the past 28 months, the initiative has significantly increased women’s use of public transport. TGSRTC Vice Chairman and Managing Director Nagireddy said the scheme enabled monthly savings of ₹1,500 to ₹2,500, especially for students and workers from middle and lower-income groups.
As a result, many women now retain a larger share of their income. Officials said this shift has improved financial independence among regular commuters.
Passenger data also shows a sharp rise in ridership. The share of women passengers increased from 40% to over 67%. On average, around 35 lakh women use RTC services daily.
Impact on mobility and system expansion
To sustain operations, the government reimburses TGSRTC for free travel. This support helps cover salaries and operational costs. It has also stabilised the corporation despite rising demand.
Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said the government launched the scheme within 48 hours of forming the Praja Prabhutvam. Since then, he noted, it has strengthened women’s mobility across sectors.
Moreover, he credited RTC staff for maintaining services under pressure. Improved connectivity has expanded access to jobs, education, healthcare and religious travel.
To improve access further, TGSRTC plans to introduce chip-based smart cards for women passengers. This system will remove the need for Aadhaar verification and simplify boarding. At the same time, it will improve data tracking and efficiency.
The corporation is also adding more buses to meet demand. At present, the scheme operates across nearly 81% of services, including Pallevelugu, District Express and City routes.
Overall, the Mahalakshmi free bus scheme continues to expand access to safe and affordable transport, supported by strong government backing and high public participation.
