Maharashtra municipal results show Mahayuti leading, BJP ahead in key cities

Mumbai: Early Maharashtra municipal results showed the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance moving ahead across the state, as counting for 29 municipal corporations continued on Friday.

According to initial trends, Mahayuti was leading in 68 seats, while the Shiv Sena (UBT)–MNS combine followed with 42 seats. Congress trailed with leads in 11 seats. The BJP maintained an edge in major urban centres, including Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur, reflecting strong performance in key civic bodies.

However, the contest remained tight in four corporations—Sangli, Kolhapur, Vasai-Virar, and Malegaon. In these areas, Congress put up stiff resistance, leaving the BJP trailing as counting progressed. Officials said clearer outcomes would emerge after later rounds.

In Mumbai, trends for 98 of the 227 wards were available. The BJP led in 42 wards, while the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) held second place with leads in 32 wards. The Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction was ahead in 15 wards.

Maharashtra municipal results highlight ward-level victories and setbacks

Congress opened its account in Dharavi, where candidate Asha Kale won Ward 183 by a margin of 1,450 votes. She defeated Shinde Sena candidate Vaishali Shewale and MNS candidate Parubai Katkale. The result was seen as significant in the high-density area.

In Ward 182, former mayor Milind Vaidya of Shiv Sena (UBT), a seven-time corporator, secured a victory. Meanwhile, the BJP registered a key win in Goregaon’s Bangur Nagar area, where Tejaswi Ghosalkar defeated Shiv Sena (UBT) youth candidate Tanvi Dinesh Raut.

The BJP also reported a clean sweep in Mira-Bhayandar, winning eight seats in a direct contest with the Shinde-led Sena. In a notable outcome, BJP candidate Navnath Baan won Ward 135 in Mankhurd, a Muslim-majority area, drawing political attention.

As counting continued, the Maharashtra municipal results pointed to a strong urban showing for the Mahayuti alliance, alongside pockets of resistance from the opposition.
