Medical tourism promotion supported through visas and infrastructure schemes: Government

New Delhi: The government said medical tourism promotion in India is being supported through visa facilitation, digital information platforms and central assistance for tourism infrastructure, while States remain responsible for destination development.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said State Governments and Union Territory administrations undertake the development and promotion of tourism destinations and products. This responsibility includes medical and wellness tourism.

At the central level, the Ministry of Tourism promotes medical and wellness tourism through a range of initiatives. These efforts aim to improve accessibility, information availability and supporting infrastructure for international patients.

To facilitate foreign nationals seeking medical treatment in India, the government extended the e-medical visa and e-medical attendant visa facilities. These visas allow patients and accompanying attendants to travel to India for healthcare services.

The minister said this visa framework plays a key role in easing entry for international patients. It also supports India’s growing healthcare services sector.

The Services Export Promotion Council, under the Ministry of Commerce, developed a dedicated portal to support healthcare travel. The website provides details on accredited hospitals, wellness centres, visa procedures and healthcare providers.

Medical tourism promotion linked to tourism infrastructure funding

According to the government, the Ministry of Tourism has linked the healthcare tourism portal on its official websites. This step helps foreign visitors access verified information through a single digital platform.

In addition, the Centre supports tourism infrastructure development through its flagship schemes. These include Swadesh Darshan, PRASHAD and Assistance to Central Agencies for Tourism Infrastructure Development.

Under these schemes, the ministry extends financial assistance to States and Union Territories. The support follows approved guidelines and depends on project proposals submitted by State governments.

The minister said these schemes help improve overall tourism infrastructure. Better connectivity, facilities and amenities also support medical and wellness tourism circuits.

The government clarified that central assistance complements State-led initiatives. States continue to identify destinations, plan projects and implement tourism promotion activities.

According to the ministry, coordinated efforts between States and the Centre aim to strengthen India’s position as a healthcare and wellness destination. The focus remains on improving visitor experience, reliability and infrastructure support.
