New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence on February 12 signed a Rs 2,312 crore deal with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for eight Dornier 228 aircraft for the Indian Coast Guard under the Buy (Indian) category.
Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh attended the signing ceremony in New Delhi. HAL’s Transport Aircraft Division in Kanpur will execute the contract. The agreement includes Operational Role Equipment for the aircraft.
The Ministry said the acquisition will strengthen India’s maritime security framework. Moreover, the project supports Aatmanirbhar Bharat and the Make-in-India initiative by promoting indigenous manufacturing.
Officials stated that the programme will generate significant direct and indirect employment. It will strengthen HAL’s production ecosystem and support a broad network of MSMEs and ancillary industries. In addition, the project will create opportunities in Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul activities and long-term technical support.
Employment and industrial boost from Dornier 228 aircraft deal
The Ministry said the contract will enhance domestic capabilities in aircraft manufacturing. Therefore, it is expected to build long-term technical capacity within the country.
The additional aircraft will support the Indian Coast Guard’s surveillance and maritime operations. As a result, the force will improve its operational reach and response capabilities.
Officials added that the deal reflects the government’s continued focus on indigenisation in defence procurement. Consequently, domestic aerospace manufacturing is likely to gain further momentum.
