Hyderabad: Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao said the Modi austerity appeal was aimed at strengthening the economy during global uncertainty. He said the Congress party misinterpreted the Prime Minister’s message. He addressed a press conference at the BJP state office in Hyderabad.
Rao said the appeal responded to ongoing tensions in West Asia. He added that the suggestions focused on financial discipline. According to him, the measures prepared the country for possible economic challenges.
He said the Prime Minister urged citizens to reduce fuel use and limit gold purchases. In addition, he encouraged fewer foreign trips. Rao stated that these steps would support national stability.
The BJP leader said the Modi austerity appeal also promoted public transport use and electric vehicles. Moreover, he noted support for solar pumps and renewable energy. He linked these actions to fuel conservation and environmental protection.
Rao said personal discipline strengthens the national economy. Therefore, he argued that citizens must support responsible spending. He added that several developed countries follow similar practices.
He criticised Congress leaders for opposing the appeal. However, he said earlier governments had also asked for public sacrifices during crises. He recalled appeals made during shortages and economic challenges.
Modi austerity appeal supports economic stability, says Rao
Rao said former Prime Ministers had urged citizens to reduce consumption during difficult periods. He cited appeals for food conservation and voluntary restraint. Furthermore, he referred to past calls for limiting gold purchases.
He questioned Congress criticism of the current initiative. According to him, similar measures were accepted in earlier decades. Therefore, he said the reaction appeared inconsistent.
Rao compared economic indicators under the NDA and previous governments. He claimed foreign exchange reserves rose significantly since 2014. He also stated that India moved from the 10th largest economy to the fifth largest economy.
He said India maintained stable petrol prices despite global pressures. In contrast, he pointed to fuel challenges faced by some neighbouring countries. He credited policy reforms for economic resilience.
Rao urged citizens to voluntarily follow the Modi austerity appeal. He suggested supporting domestic tourism and Indian products. He said the BJP follows a “Nation First” approach in governance.
BJP state spokesperson N V Subhash, treasurer Vasudev Rao and other leaders attended the briefing. They supported the party’s position on the issue.
