Mumbai: Mumbai heavy rainfall killed two people and injured two others in a landslide at Jankalyan Society in Vikhroli’s Varsha Gir area as the city received 213mm of rain between 11 PM Friday and 6 AM Saturday.
The Mumbai heavy rainfall continued into Saturday, with a red alert issued for six Maharashtra districts, including Mumbai. Railway tracks on the Harbour Line were submerged under water, disrupting train services across the network.
Areas including Sion, Vashi and Navi Mumbai experienced waterlogging up to four feet deep due to the Mumbai heavy rainfall. Local administration advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors during the weather emergency.
The overnight downpour of 213mm in Vikhroli represented intense precipitation that triggered the fatal landslide in the residential society area. Emergency response teams rushed to the location to conduct rescue operations and provide medical assistance to the injured.
Delhi Yamuna crosses danger mark as Mumbai heavy rainfall affects multiple states
Delhi’s Yamuna river level reached 204.65 meters, crossing the danger mark as heavy rainfall affected northern regions. The rising water levels posed flood risks to low-lying areas along the river basin.
Bihar’s Seemanchal and eastern districts faced flood situations, with Bhagalpur district alone affecting 6 lakh people. The Ganga-Kosi river levels rose significantly, prompting authorities to open all 109 gates of the Farakka Barrage.
However, Bihar recorded below-normal rainfall this season with only 492mmof precipitation against the normal 647mm expected by this period. The deficit rainfall contrasted with flooding conditions caused by upstream water discharge.
The Mumbai heavy rainfall formed part of intensified monsoon activity across western India, while river flooding in eastern states created complex water management challenges for multiple state governments simultaneously.
