India Accelerates National Gas Grid Expansion Nationwide

New Delhi: India has intensified efforts to strengthen energy access through a faster National Gas Grid Expansion, according to information shared in the Rajya Sabha. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has authorised 34,233 km of natural gas pipelines. These cover common-carrier routes, spur lines, tie-in connectivity and dedicated networks. Of this network, 25,429 km were operational as of June 2025. Another 10,459 km were under construction.

National Gas Grid Expansion progresses with infrastructure support and policy measures

The Government has introduced several measures under its ‘One Nation, One Gas Grid’ approach. These include approving trunk pipelines and providing viability gap funding in low-demand regions. It has also implemented a unified tariff, expanded the City Gas Distribution network and set up LNG terminals. Furthermore, the Government has given marketing and pricing freedom within defined ceilings for gas from specialised fields. It is also promoting Bio-CNG through the SATAT initiative.

Continuous coordination with State Governments and implementing agencies is helping resolve challenges. As a result, project timelines are moving faster. The expansion aims to improve access to clean, reliable and affordable energy for households, rural areas, industrial clusters and CGD networks. In industrial zones, better gas availability supports competitiveness, attracts investment and creates jobs. Within CGD networks, wider access to CNG and PNG encourages cleaner mobility, domestic convenience and environmental sustainability.
