NHRC concludes February 2026 online internship programme

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India on Tuesday concluded its February 2026 NHRC internship programme, with 71 university-level students successfully completing the two-week online course.

According to PIB Delhi, the Online Short Term Internship (OSTI) began on 2nd February 2026. A total of 71 students from 18 states and Union Territories, including remote regions, were shortlisted from 1,114 applicants. They participated in interactive sessions and academic activities during the programme.

In his valedictory address, NHRC Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal congratulated the interns on completing the NHRC internship programme. He urged them to internalise their learning and develop sensitivity towards human rights issues. He said they should evolve as model citizens who understand both their rights and duties.

He stressed that protecting and promoting human rights is not the sole responsibility of the government. Instead, he said citizens must also play an active role. He highlighted justice, liberty, equality and fraternity as pillars of the Constitutional framework that ensure dignity and respect for all.

Secretary General urges outreach after NHRC internship programme

Shri Bharat Lal advised the interns to visit schools and spread awareness about hygiene, sanitation and sexual offences. He said such outreach could prevent human rights violations. Moreover, he asked them to reflect on their own actions and become catalysts of change.

He noted that vulnerable groups, including beggars, transgender persons and persons with disabilities, often face serious rights violations. Therefore, he said society must help them secure their rightful entitlements.

Earlier, NHRC Joint Secretary Smt. Saidingpuii Chhakchhuak presented the internship report. She said the interns gained exposure through sessions with the NHRC Chairperson, Members, Secretary General, senior officers, government officials and civil society experts. She also announced winners of competitions such as book review, group research presentation and declamation.

Lt. Col. Virender Singh, Director, NHRC delivered the vote of thanks, marking the formal conclusion of the NHRC internship programme.
