NMDC digitalisation drive gains momentum at Donimalai Complex

New Delhi: NMDC reviewed key projects under its NMDC digitalisation drive at the Donimalai Complex in Karnataka as part of efforts to improve operational efficiency, expand production capacity and promote sustainable mining practices.

Senior management visited the complex to assess ongoing initiatives aimed at transforming Donimalai into a future-ready mining hub. The review also focused on projects supporting NMDC’s long-term goal of becoming a 100 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) mining company.

Officials examined capacity expansion and infrastructure development projects at the Kumaraswamy Mine and the Donimalai Complex. According to NMDC, the company aims to achieve production of 10 MTPA from Kumaraswamy Mine and 17 MTPA from the Donimalai Complex.

The management also reviewed efforts to utilise low-grade iron-bearing materials that traditionally remained underutilised. These include iron ore slimes, Banded Hematite Jasper and Banded Hematite Quartzite.

Through beneficiation and scientific mineral processing, NMDC is converting these materials into valuable resources. As a result, the company can recover more iron ore while reducing waste generation and improving mineral conservation.

NMDC digitalisation drive boosts operational transparency

A major focus of the review was the newly implemented automated gate management system at the Kumaraswamy Mine. The digital platform enables real-time monitoring and verification of iron ore dispatches.

Consequently, the system improves transparency, strengthens operational oversight and reduces manual intervention. Officials said it also helps ensure secure transportation of mineral resources to designated destinations.

NMDC Chairman and Managing Director Amitava Mukherjee, along with functional directors, inaugurated newly developed infrastructure facilities, including high-rise residential towers for employees.

The company said the infrastructure reflects its commitment to employee welfare and community development. Furthermore, NMDC continues to emphasise sustainable growth through improved living standards and environmental stewardship.

Speaking during the visit, Mukherjee said NMDC aims to develop Donimalai into a model mining complex that reflects responsible mining, innovation and employee welfare. He added that the company remains committed to supplying high-quality iron ore to India’s steel industry while maximising resource value through technology and innovation.

The NMDC digitalisation drive forms an important part of the company’s strategy to enhance productivity, support sustainability and advance its 100 MTPA vision.
