Hyderabad: In a strategic move to strengthen industry–academia collaboration, NMDC, India’s largest iron ore producer, signed an MoU with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur to advance cybersecurity and introduce modern digital technologies, including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, into its operations.
NMDC’s Executive Director (Digital Transformation), Satyendra Rai, and IIT Kanpur’s Dean of R&D, Prof. Ashoke De, signed the agreement. IIT Kanpur Director Prof. Manindra Agrawal and senior officials from both institutions were present at the event.
The collaboration aims to boost NMDC’s digital transformation. It will focus on cybersecurity risk assessment, governance support, AI/ML deployment, security operations and incident response planning.

The agreement also opens the door for training programmes, pilot projects and proof-of-concept solutions. NMDC and IIT Kanpur will jointly take up research work and knowledge-sharing efforts.
NMDC Chairman and Managing Director Amitava Mukherjee said the partnership brings IIT Kanpur’s research expertise into NMDC’s operational systems. “This collaboration will strengthen our digital defences, improve operational intelligence and build a secure, future-ready technological base for NMDC,” he added.
The MoU reinforces NMDC’s commitment to becoming a digitally resilient and innovation-driven mining organisation.
