Kavitha seeks OBC sub quota in women’s reservation bill

Hyderabad: Kalvakuntla Kavitha has demanded the inclusion of an OBC sub quota in the women reservation bill, stressing that equitable representation remains incomplete without it.

She said the proposed 33 percent reservation for women marks a significant step forward. However, she argued that the absence of an OBC sub quota weakens the goal of inclusive representation. According to her, ignoring backward class women excludes a large section of society from meaningful political participation.

OBC sub quota women reservation bill debate intensifies

Kavitha emphasised that “reservation within reservation” is essential for ensuring true social justice. Therefore, she called for internal categorisation within the women’s quota.

She also warned that the Centre should not proceed without addressing this demand. Otherwise, she said, her organisation may launch fresh protests to highlight the issue.

Earlier, her organisation mobilised political parties and women’s groups to support the bill. In fact, they staged protests at Jantar Mantar to push for broader inclusion.

Call for unity among OBC leaders and women

Kavitha questioned how lawmakers can ensure justice without guaranteeing representation for OBC women. Meanwhile, she pointed out that Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes already benefit from constitutionally mandated reservations.

She urged leaders across political parties to unite on this issue. In addition, she called on OBC women representatives to raise a collective voice for fair inclusion.

As a result, she believes sustained pressure can influence policymakers to adopt a more inclusive approach. She also noted that earlier efforts by her organisation helped bring momentum to the women reservation bill.

Kavitha reiterated that the fight for an OBC sub quota in the women reservation bill will continue. Ultimately, she said, true empowerment depends on ensuring representation for all sections of society.
