New Delhi: The Election Commission of India has announced a paid holiday on polling day for voters during the 2026 general and bye-elections.
The elections will be held across several states, including Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Therefore, the move aims to ensure maximum voter participation.
Polling is scheduled on April 9 and April 23, while West Bengal will vote in two phases on April 23 and April 29.
Paid holiday polling day rule applies to all workers
Under Section 135B of the Representation of the People Act, all eligible voters employed in any establishment are entitled to a paid holiday polling day.
No wages will be deducted for this leave. In addition, employers violating the rule may face penalties.
The provision also applies to daily wage and casual workers. As a result, all categories of employees can exercise their voting rights.
Further, voters working outside their constituency will also get leave to travel and vote. This ensures broader participation in the electoral process.
The Election Commission has directed all states and Union Territories to enforce the rule strictly. Officials have been asked to ensure voters can cast their votes freely and conveniently.
The decision reinforces the importance of democratic participation and aims to remove workplace barriers to voting.
