Jammu: Union Power Minister Shri Manohar Lal carried out a hydroelectric projects review in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, inspecting key NHPC projects during the first day of his two-day visit.
The Minister arrived in Jammu along with Power Secretary Shri Pankaj Agarwal to assess the progress of ongoing hydroelectric works in the Union Territory. The visit covered projects located in Reasi, Ramban, and Kishtwar districts.
NHPC Chairman and Managing Director Shri Bhupendra Gupta briefed the Minister on the status of various hydroelectric projects in the region. He outlined construction progress, operational challenges, and timelines for completion.
During the visit, Shri Manohar Lal inspected NHPC’s Salal Power Project in Reasi district. He reviewed ongoing works at the site and directed NHPC to speed up sediment removal operations in the Salal reservoir.
The Salal Power Station, located on the Chenab River, had begun sediment removal after the termination of the Indus Waters Treaty. The exercise aims to clear accumulated silt and improve optimal use of water resources.

While at the Salal Power Station, the Minister also undertook a plantation drive within the premises. Through this, he underlined the government’s focus on environmental conservation and sustainable development.
In addition, he held discussions with local administration officials and senior officers from concerned departments. These discussions focused on coordination and timely execution of project works.
Later, while travelling towards Kishtwar, Shri Manohar Lal conducted an aerial inspection of the Sawalkot Hydroelectric Project, which has a planned capacity of 1,856 MW. He reviewed site conditions and project alignment during the flight.
Upon reaching Kishtwar, the Minister visited the Ratle Hydroelectric Project. There, he laid the foundation stone for dam concreting works and urged the project team to complete construction within the stipulated timeline.
The two-day visit will continue with further inspections and reviews of NHPC projects across the Union Territory. Officials said the hydroelectric projects review aimed to strengthen power infrastructure and ensure efficient project delivery in Jammu and Kashmir.
